How can we improve SwiftKey?

More than three predictions

It would be nice to see 6 or even 9 predictions stacked on top of each other instead of just 3. I seem to have to press one or two letters a lot of the time to see the word I'm looking for. With a customizable few more rows of predictions, I would sacrifice some screen real estate to say what I have to say faster.

What if you don't know the next letter? What if I'm a poor speller? This is ridiculous. Give us more than three predictions. Back to Swype again.

3 suggestions makes using flow very difficult please add more suggestions like swype or touchpal

      • Anonymous commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

This is the reason I keep getting back to Swype. The three prediction limit makes flow useless, especially if you've got more than one language enabled.

      • Matth78Matth78 commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

+1, three predictions only with flow is a pain. It would be nice to long press suggested words to get more options

Almost every other keyboard I've used offers more than 3 predictions, and every time I come back to SwiftKey I find this to be one of the big drawbacks. Your reasoning is based on using the keyboard without Flow, where you type part of it then choose the suggestion. Most people, however, are likely using Flow, and for us, we Flow the word then choose the correct word if the incorrect one is input. Oftentimes the word I intended is not included in the three suggestions, so I have to delete the word and try again from scratch. This is annoying and slow. If there was an arrow on the right of the suggestions to drop down a list (say 3x3) of additional words, then people could choose whether to use just the three basic suggestions or to tap the arrow and see a bigger list. Bottom line, it shouldn't matter if you believe it would slow people down, what matters is giving people the option they clearly want with almost 700 votes.

+1 for reconsidering this option. Only 3 predictions in combination with Flow is an awful work flow. Please try this yourself! You'll be so annoyed that this one will be top priority :p

Sorry to say this, Sarah, but you're just plain wrong. You guys wanted to attract Swype users by adding Flow and you impose this ridiculous three word limit. For people using Flow, three suggestions is crippling. Perhaps you could add an option to increase the number of suggestions and make the option only available when you have Flow enabled? This three word limit is the sole reason I've gone back to Swype. It's infuriating.

Hm, fascinating. I just thought I'd give SwiftKey a go because you fixed the ticket for smiley key for enter in Hangouts... and then I discover this.
Obviously when swiping ("flow"), you can't just type another letter. And I can't vote because you've declined? Nice, back to Swype then. Sad.

      • JohnJohn commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Why not have another think about this one? The keyboard isn't so accurate that you can have all of the possibilities covered by three options. I thought holding down on the middle option and suggesting another grid of predictions would be a neat solution. If you want to retype, you can retype. If you want to log press and select from more predictions, you can do that as well. Leave it up to the user.

      • Will Will commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Isn't the point that now there is the flow option, not all users tap one key at a time, so decision needs review

      • RobertRobert commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

I happen to agree with the suggestion of more than 3 suggestions. I will type a word ... say I want supportive. I may get support, supports and supported and if I had a little button to choose more forms, It could show me supported, supportive, supportively and so forth. Given that standard keyboards do this, I don't understand the resistance to this suggestion.

Something tells me that the proportional "cognitive load" is relative to the individual's processing capacity, so why not offer the option? One major reason that I tend to use TouchPal more than your keyboard is the additional predictions they offer (please steal their walkie-talkie voice input, while we're on the subject. At this point, I only use your keyboard for the additional row of secondary charcters.)

      • My nameMy name commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Im thinking the same. If with this idea SwiftKey will be more slow, put a option where we can choose 3, 6 or 9 options... With only tree options swype is faster.

      • Andrew KennedyAndrew Kennedy commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Perhaps having to recognize and process more than 3 words is more cognitive load, but when one is always the currently typed word (in case you want to stop where you are) the that only leaves 2 spots for predictions. What slows me down is typing a letter or two, checking if my word is predicted, typing a couple more letters, checking again, etc. Honestly I can type faster when I don't use the predictions. Or having the different predictions jump from left to right. There needs to be a dedicated 'current word' button and at least the option for more predictions. Additionally, flow completely bypasses predictions and I have to flow the whole word, not worth it.

      • DanDan commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

What increases cognitive load and increases typing time is flow typing a word only to get three wrong suggestions, then having to delete and flow-type again, and possibly again, until the correct word comes up.

      • CelsoCelso commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

The number of words could be defined by the user in some parameter of "definitions" screen. If the user feels its being to slow, he can change it back to three words.

      • hstoerrhstoerr commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

I'll too give now up completely on Swiftkey. I've switched to A.I. Type Keyboard a while ago because of this annoying limitiation, and it doesn't have this problem. If they just care about the average user - OK, I'm not one.

      • Anonymous commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Thanks for being so clear that you won't do this. In that case, I'm going back to Swype.
