In case it helps anyone, I have found a decent workaround for typing multiple spaces with the "always insert a prediction" mode turned on is to press the left arrow to go back to the end of the previous word before typing each space. When you have the desired number, you can then use the right arrow to go back to the end.
That said, long press on the spacebar to insert a space would be fantastic. (And if it gave the option to insert a tab instead via the long-press popup menu, that would be even better.)

I was about to suggest this but found your 1+ year old suggestion.. I would love this feature! Feels like it would be very quick/simple to implement.

The prediction selection method is inconsistent when entering odd words or single letters. Sometimes it will be on the left, sometimes the center. This slows down typing and forces the user to scan the predictions to avoid making mistakes. By implementing long-press on space bar to force a space and move to the next word, this would allow for consistency and speed up these situations. My 2c.

+1. There is no way to insert a space manually if you choose the option "Spacebar will always insert a prediction". Please allow long press on spacebar to give us this possibility.
