Make it possible to switch between the smiley and the enter button permanently
That I could choose if I like the smiley or the enter ar the right bottom corner
In programs where it would apply, like Talk for instance, have the ability to change the return /smiley key to a seed button.
I'm not the type of person who use smiley face a lot and long pressing the smiley face to press enter is annoying. It's the only gripe I have with this keyboard.
Would be nice to have the choice to disable smiley face many or swap it with enter button and the smiley face menu by long pressing.

please look at this 2 screenshots from my HTC One X...
Whatsapp--> Return Key
SMS by HTX--> Smiley Key
please fix this.. i want the Enter key in both first...
not being able to do this is really annoying!
i love everything about the keyboard, i just hate how there's no option to remove the smiley key or at least leave it as a "Enter" Key
Have the option to change the default button function for the enter key to be either smileys/emoticons or enter/new line. Not all of your PAYING users are 12 year old girls who adds a smiley face after each sentence. Either revert back to your old method where in all text fields (especially in messaging apps), the bottom right corner of the keyboard was enter/new line and by long pressing, you get an array of useless smileys, or give us the option to choose what we want. If you think all your prepubescent customers are paying for this app using their credit card, you're dead wrong SwiftKey. Change it back. Until you fix what you guys obviously screwed up, I have to now find an illegal apk of an old version or try to find a backup version on my sd card...so Thank you, devs for assuming we all use smileys. :-)
Enter key should always be enter key as default.
Enter key in messaging should not put a smiley. It should switch to next line. Long pressing enter key to actually make the enter key work and not put a smiley is very inconvenient especially when i hv to send a fast text. Please do look into it. Because the keyboard is perfect otherwise and i absolutely love it. Only this little thing is a bit of problem. Your response would be highly appreciated.
Seriously, this is the single most frustrating thing about SwiftKey and almost caused me not to buy it. There's nothing worse than going to tap backspace a few times and ending up with a bunch of smileys on accident. Also having to press-hold for the return key? No!
PLEASE give us the option to switch the return key to the press-once option and have smileys be the press-hold option, or better yet, completely remove the smileys. I don't think this is just me that uses the return key more often than smileys.
The other thread I saw about this was more than a year and a half old and was getting no attention despite 1700+ votes and 160+ comments.
Put the smiley button into the long press mode and I bring the enter button up on the foreground!
Ability to change default function of bottom right key during regular txting (mode).
Option to set the enter key primary over the happy face feature when writing a message
Would like to change the function. I struggle with premature textulation :p
Give the option to have the smiley faces be the secondary option for those who use the return key more often.
delete the emotocon button gets in the way and I never use it
For some reason the carriage return and happy face key get inverted where the happy face is the main function. Why does this happen and will you allow us to change it.?
I think the return key should be a default press, but I acknowledge that some do not agree. I would appreciate the ability to toggle that option, though. I never use smileys, and the main reason I was going to purchase swiftkey was to get rid of the smiley face button on default Android 4.1.
I miss the smile button on the enter button. How can I get it? I am a German user and would like have a answer in german language please.
The single most annoying feature is the fact that SwiftKey automatically inserts a smiley in text messages instead of allowing you to hit enter for a new paragraph. There should be an option to disable smileys. They are inappropriate for messages between professionals, and the fact that a smiley shows up as the default instead of a hard return is a mistake.
Get rid of the pointless and useless dedicated smiley face key. It was an original feature on my droidX, then Motorola removed it in an update. What made you decide that it was something that was needed?
There should be an option to get rid of the emoticon button when in sms mode. I accidentally hit it all the time and I will never use it
Why do smileys have precedence on the return key? This doesn't make sense. Please provide a way to make Return the primary function on that
I never use the smileys you have stored on that button but I use the return/enter function every day. Could you at least make that buttons primary function optional?
The Enter key should be available for all functions and the long press action should be secondary for smileys.
I use the return key much more than the smiley face in chat can those please be switched or have an option to switch them
I love the keyboard, but when im texting the enter key becomes a smily face key, make it optional to have the smile or not bc i use enter a lot nd having to hold it down hit enter nd then the abc key again slows me down
The Enter key doesn't work directly in SMS mode. Please make it as default instead of taking the user to emoticons
The enter key is more useful than the smilies key so switching the order to have a single press for enter and long press for smilies within the HTC messages apply would be great
The only complaint I have ever had about SwiftKey is the default smiley face in messages, with the long-press return. The latest release makes it even worse. Return requires 1) long-press, 2) tap on return, 3) alpha tap to return to regular keys. PLEASE make the return key/emoticon key default behavior optional.
This feature existed in previous versions of SwiftKey, but it's absent in v3! Can you bring it back? Some people use emoticons in almost any context and some of them are really awkward to type manually.
When return is not available (when writing sms/tweet etc.) I sometimes accidently press the smiley button. As I never use those smileys, they're actually quite irritating. I'd like to see that button blank when when return is not available.
If we would rather create our own emoticons, don't waste keyboard space with this button. Either let us remap or remove the key to make other keys larger (like the space bar).
Is possible disabled smile button?
I think the return key should be the single press and the symbols should be the long press
If not the keyboard revert to alphabetic after the return key has been pressed
Add an option to disable the smiley key. I never use it and would much prefer to just use it as an enter key
You should make it optional to be able to just long press the return key and have smileys pop up and keep the return key as just one press. I literally never use the smiley key, its dumb and I do use the enter key but its such a hassle to get to it
Have enter as the first choice instead of smile in the massage mode. Or make it possible to choose.
Instead of having smilies as the enter button, make the enter button for enter and long press for smilies.
swapping the enter and emotion keys around was a BADDDD idea.. i try to hit enter for a new line and get a smiley and do this over and over.
Can't turn of the default selection of a smiley instead of a line break when writing smses. Annoying to have to go through several steps of clicking to open the smiley menu and select line break instead, which is placed by the edge of the screen and therefore not always clickable on my phone. Everywhere else but in smses, the linebreak is the default selection as it should be.
Also, when using Arabic keyboard, please make it possible to show only the English numbers (AKA Arabic numbers), NOT both at the English (AKA Arabic) and Arabic (AKA Indian) numbers at the same time.!! It's very crowded and confusing now. In fact, it would be much better if you remove the Arabic numbers (AKA Indian) abd stick with the original Arabic numbers (AKA English numbers).
I want the enter/return key to be like a normal key and if you longpress you get the smilies.
Not an insta smiley instead of enter/return. Which is VERY annoying.
You use enter/return more than smilies in general.
As I said.
Allow us to switch Enter key and Smiley options.
I use the enter key a lot, but its annoying to have to long press to make a new line.
Would love an option to be able to switch it around so i have to long press for smileys.
Make the key by default a return/next line, and as that gets used all the time in texting, hold for smilies
Hate holding for the sub menu just to start a new line...
See it mostly in texting
Not Web
Thanks ;-)
I need a carriage return, not a smilley face in all applications that require keyboard input.
Without a carriage return, except by long keypress then pressing the arrow key, my communications run together and become confusing.
Paragraphs are essential to all languages. Lack of a carriage return makes this keyboard unusable to me. I am disabling it now for the stock keyboard which has a carriage return and speeds the clarity of my typing and message.
I rarely use emoticons (smileys) but I do often want to start a new paragraph, so the option to choose the default action of the return key to always be start a new paragraph and require longpress to insert smiley would be very useful.
Would be nice to be able to disable the smiley function on the enter key, or to remove the enter key altogether and widen the spacebar. I never use this, and frequently just hit it on accident.
I'm really sick of accidently inserting emoticons, it'd be great. If I could swap enter to be primary and have the emoticon menu be the Long press.
Posebility to change the return key to a default smily.
Why Enter key changes to Smiley key when writing SMS????? This bug is very frustrating... Please fix.
It just happened all of a sudden during SMS texting.
It was exactly the same with the trial version too.
At first: press for new line, long-press for smileys and then all of a sudden after texting an entire day it just CHANGED.
I have an HTC Desire HD and it's only like this during.
For instance now while I'm writing this in Opera the enter key is making a new line.
I'd like to move the rarely used smiley key to the numbers page and leave just the return key.
I pretty much covered it in the title.
Seperate the return key from the Smiley.
I need return key back instead of smileys.
Make enter key default istead of the emoticons
A simple checkbox or other option type to force the lower right button to always be line return instead of an emoticon.
The thing keeping me from using swiftkey x day to day is a setting to remove the smiley key and make the space bar bigger. Also I'd like to be able have the voice key pull up voice to text by default.
There should be opption to remove smileys (emoticones) from "enter" button, coz not everyone using them.
Please could make it possible to change the default action for the return key when typing. When writing text messages it always wants insert a smiley face, which is very frustrating.
The old SwiftKey had the option to turn off smileys on the enter button... PLEASE bring that option back. I never use your built in smileys. Ever.
Make the smiley key optional. I never use it and accidentally hit it sometimes.
How do I change the bottom right key to be a smiley face instead of the enter/next line thing?
Enter an Option where the User can on/off the smiliebutton instead of the returnbutton. Because many Progs will give you an..enterfunktion......but smiliebutton...this woulb be an nice gimmik.
I don't use emoticons frequently enough to warrant its own button, and it often gets in the way of pushing the ?, which leads to really embarrassing exchanges at times. It would be nice to see an option to hide it entirely.
Give smiley button and give option to Move Question mark the another page and give option remove Setting button to expand space bar more.
In this recent Swiftkey X, the Enter button takes the place of ":D" emoticon (that i personnally always use it). Can you please solve this little problem ?
Currently the status of the bottom-right button is determined by information given to us by the app or text field that you are using – the app developer or web developer will indicate whether the bottom-right button should be smiley/new line, go, confirm, next field, etc. Smiley and Enter (new line) are the most common uses, but not the only uses of this button.
We have improved our handling of the smiley/enter functions so this should not longer cause you any trouble.
We are working on making the choice between enter and smileys more intuitive – watch this space for updates.
This suggestion is now under review. Thanks for your input and watch this space for more updates :-)

SwiftKey has the worst developer support I've ever seen for an app. Their response to every reasonable and popular suggestion is a justification or excuse and then they promptly ignore everyone else. They very much have a "We're smarter than our customers and we're above them."
Look at their updates. Seriously, we've been begging for simple options this whole time and what do you give us? Terrible new themes.
For once, try listening to your paying customers. By the way, using the enter key in this comment wasn't easy because your keyboard, which obviously knows better than I do, really wanted me to enter a smiley instead.

Thats strange Sarah Reynolds. The default keyboard of my phone has a enter key instead a smile key (and, almost all the keyboards apps), but, the Swiftkey app has a information, given by my default SMS app, that there, need to be a Smile key!
Well, even that being strange, isn't more easy and, according with all those posts, that's better to give to us a option to choose what we want?

Completely agree with everyone here, along with making the enter button prominent over the smiley key, you should change the actual smileys as nobody does them that way anyways

This has been said over and over - It appears for me to be an issue only in the keyboard presented in the texting app. Shows the same on both the HTC models and LG models.
I paid for this. You certainly didn't display these comments on your app listing. The reviews there were all roses.
It should be a simple toggle in "preferences"
That the last developer comment or update on this was Jan, 2013, is really unbelievable.
Fix it now, please.

Are you kidding me?! I've been hunting all over the settings for a way to change the enter key from "Smiley Face" to "new line" because I thought there would be no way in hell that anyone in their right mind would make a smiley face the default function of that key. I had swiftkey on my S3 last year and it didn't do that, I don't know why it's the only option on my HTC One. Please fix this error of judgement!

Please just add that simple option to disable smileys. I personally do not care that some web developer want me to insert smileys instead of new lines.
What is the benefit of owning a copy of your keyboard if it does not serve it purpose of making live of their users simpler?
This problem does not need a rocket science to solve nor two years to decide what to do. -

"the app developer or web developer will indicate whether the bottom-right button should be smiley/new line, go, confirm, next field, etc"
The App developer didn't buy this keyboard, I did. Give us an option in the settings to set a default function for the key that overrides the text field. Make it a setting option not default and everyone is happy.
Yosh has it thought out pretty good too- ' "Don't let Smileys take over the primary function of the return key" - that would override only that specific case. "Search", "Go", etc. would still work, where appropriate. '

Hi, i'm just here saying i love the app and bought.
The only flawed thing i see with it is this return key! Please give an option to remove it as I truly hate that smiley option coming up everytime i hit enter. I don't use smileys like that and it becomes annoying that i have to keep backspacing for this

As a suggestion: I have seen there are many alternatives that appear - not only return vs. smiley. For example, sometimes it is "search" or "go". The main pain point here seems to be return vs. smiley, though. So I would suggest a simple option that says: "Don't let Smileys take over the primary function of the return key" - that would override only that specific case. "Search", "Go", etc. would still work, where appropriate.

I've just moved from an iPhone to a HTC one and immediately installed swift key to only find out that it struggles with a simple return key
As others have said it slows down the typing and is a major problem. Not everyone puts smiley faces above grammar especially in a work environment

I cannot agree enough with the comments added here.
Next line SHOULD have presedence over smileys.
We're not asking for much, just an option to make next line priority if preferred.
You done something similar with the space key to add a fullstop on double click. Whats the problem? -

Been using and loving this application for a while now.
Not having the option for a dedicated return will stop me from using this excellent and, otherwise, we'll thought out application. I use hard returns in messages for clarity and having to long press for a return takes far too long. -

I use SMS for work... im not a kid and I dont use emoticons. Can you not just add the feature in to let grown ups choose how they want to communicate???

+1 - The smiley face should be the option presented after long press within a text message, not the default option.

That may be but isn't the whole point of Swiftkey is to alter the default keyboard settings to make typing more efficient? The current system does not do that.
Besides, when I type an SMS in my default keyboard, I don't get the emoticons so how can you say it's down to my "app developer or web developer " when it's blatantly not the case? If it was, I'd be screaming at them too.

Riddle me this:
After a full, well written sentence which ended with a period, why in the hell would i want the enter key to make a smiley face?
If i wanted a bloody smiley (1 time in 100 or 1000), i wouldn't have put that period there.Absolutely ridiculous that i can't lock the enter key as an enter key.
