Need to have basic gestures and the ability to customize for our own needs.
I would like to have customisable gesture actions like with smart keyboard. I enjoy having the ability to swipe back to delete the last word but I would also like to be able to swipe to the right to switch between the qwerty keyboard and a t9 option for when I'm typing with one hand. Or an option to toggle swipe input on and off.
Customise gestures. Like swipe right for symbols or down for shift.
swipe-up for upper-case, swipe-down for numbers... like touchpal does. It would be a lot quicker than finding the shift keys or long pressing.
It will be great if in the advanced menu, we could choose what does each swipe direction do (Up, down, left, right).
For example, a swipe up will be great for changing languages.
In the same way I miss the 'backspace delete sweep' from SwiftKey when using other interfaces, I really miss a sweep to move the cursor (I used to enjoy in another input app) back and forth. It's a simple and practical ideal: sweep left+right = back cursor ; sweep righ+left = forward cursor. Very useful for fast corrections of unwanted inserted space.
Hi,. It would be niche to have some fun more gestures to make SwiftKey keyboard even more useful.
I think abut moving two fingers up to get upcased characters. Moving two fingers crossed down go make them lowercased again. Using the well known zoom gestures to switch between characters, and symbols and numbers. A stroke in any direction with three fingers could simulate the arrow keys.
It is much easier to make a gesture the to tap on a little Button ;-).
To implement gestures recognition aimed to trigger customizable shortcuts or system options.
Example: to choose keyboard language by sliding finger rightwise over space-bar.
If we could change what each gesture will do, it might solve some issue like the need for arrow key, or shortcut to something else.
Swipe right gesture isn't utilized, and SwiftKey requires two taps to activate voice input. Enabling swipe right gesture that automatically starts the voice input will let users quickly enter text when keyboarding isn't an option.
Basically give us more options to control what the gestures do. I mainly would love to be able to swipe up or down to hide/show the arrow keys.
Since swipe right currently has no function, it would be nice if you could select what you'd like it to do.
Here's a few ideas (some of these have already suggested by others):
Undelete word deleted by swipe left (suggested by Sandeep Deepak)
Toggle arrow keys (suggested by Anonymous)
Switch to numberpad/symbol keyboard
Change keyboard layout
Space/accept best prediction candidate
One of the only reasons that I used Swype wasn't for the swiping, but for the options screen that had select, select all, arrow keys, copy, paste, etc. I think most would agree that the arrow keys option currently makes the keyboard take up too much space, but if I could swipe to another layout with all of those text/ cursor manipulation options that Swype has, that would really be a killer feature for me. Select and then arrow around to choose selection is much better for me than select all or selecting with the handlers. I am sure it has been said before but drawing patterns for text substitution is also a wonderful feature that some others have that I really liked (8pen for example).
I bought Swiftkey Pro, but recently quit using it - because I prefer gestures to move the cursor like the arrow keys do.
I come from Swype to test SwiftKey, and I really miss Swype's gestures whih start on the Swype "S" symbol: swype to 'a' for "select all", to 'c' for copy, to 'v' for paste', to backspace for deleting a character (or suppressing the automatic space inserted if you want to compose words), and some more.
+1 to Nélson Cunha's comment. Google's Pinyin keyboard allows capitalization by sliding up and symbol by sliding down. It is such a useful feature
Definitely a feature I miss from smart keyboard! Ability to customise what up, down, left and right swipes do.

Yes also swipe left to delete one character rather than a word. Swipe right for a space. Ok we have preferences so I'd like to see gestures configurable in settings.
A thousand times yes! This takes care of many other suggestions I see here: different tenses/ word forms (plural, past tense, verb vs noun), as well as showing other possible intended words.
Yes, would love this as well. Smart Keyboard Pro has this nailed. I'd like to swipe UP for word delete. It's easier!
I'd also be ok with this is you only added back in the option from the previous version to swipe up for upper case. I had really gotten used to that. Thanks!

I'd say even more... swipe up for upper-case and swipe-down for any simbol on that key (not just numbers)
Take a look at this old keyboard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtFRarsgnEM that came with my first android phone. Check at 2:23.
I'd love that keyboard.
Every letter would have a number/symbol as an alternative, that could be quickly called by swipping down.

That doesn't really do it for upper-case, though. And I don't want a shorter long-press time, i just make more accidental long presses that way.
Try touchpal for a bit - it really is convenient (it's one of the few things that keyboard gets right though!)
Just reduce your long press time to around 175ms if that's an issue.
And then we can remove the shift key, or at least make it smaller! good idea! I never use the "swipe down to minimise keyboard" anyway
This should also be able to take you to the 'end' of what you're typing. As in, go back, fix some words and swipe right to go back to the end and continue typing.

My idea wasn't to change, but to expand. "Right to left sweep " would continue to equal delete... but "fast right to left THEN BACK TO RIGHT" would equal "cursor back". (please reconsider, thanks anyway)

You could just use the arrow keys
Would like to swipe right to insert space. I regulary hit "." instead of space

i'd like a "wiggle" right to left to delete all text (or maybe just to last period), as I'm very fond of swipe right to left to delete whole words.
I totally agree, similar to smart keyboard pro!

Take a look at this screenshot. Thsi is what happens in the "swype" keyboard when you swype form the "swype" key to the "sym" key:
As you can see, you get a whole new keyboard with tons of functionality that most people can only dream of with an on screen keyboard.
It sure would be nice if swiftkey did something like this too.
Great idea, I use the arrow keys frequently but hate having them on screen all the time as they take too much room..
